Santa Monica Farmers Market History

Santa Monica farmers markets were created to help build vibrant and inclusive communities connected by a desire to preserve the agricultural arts while boosting the prosperity of California farmers, small food businesses, and sustainable food systems.

That all started when California Certified Farmers’ Markets (CFM’s) were established in 1978. This let California farmers sell their produce directly to consumers at areas set aside by the Department of Agriculture. Plenty of small weekly markets sprouted up before four main Santa Monica farmers markets were established.
