Best Malibu Beaches

Even in exclusive Malibu there are family-friendly public beaches, located along the famed beauty of the Pacific Coast Highway. Here are our five favorites for your perfect southern California beach day, whether your family loves to surf, hike, explore, or just relax in the sun-warmed sand.

Zuma Beach

Zuma Beach the quintessential California beach – sprawling miles of sand, gorgeous sunsets, lots of food stands, and sand volleyball courts. There’s room for fishing and surfing, or sunbathing on the pristine white sand. In the winter it’s a prime spot to watch migrating gray whales.

Leo Carillo State Park

For sleeping under the stars hit Leo Carrillo State Park. Despite the damage caused by the Woolsey Fire, much of the park’s sycamore-shaded campground has reopened. The kids will love exploring tide pools, reefs, and coastal caves. Their extensive visitor center is a great place to learn about the gray whales that swim nearby.

Point Dume Nature Preserve

Point Dume Nature Preserve has some of the Malibu area’s best hiking. A trail leads to the top of a coastal bluff sand dune where hikers can look out on Santa Monica Bay, north Malibu Coast, and the Santa Monica Mountains. On a clear day you can see all the way to Catalina Island.

Surfirder Beach

If everyone’s surfing now, a visit to Surfirder Beach is a must. Many of the classic beach movies of the 1950s and ‘60s were filmed at Surfrider, which retains its chill, funky vibe. Surf, watch surfers, or cast a line off Malibu Pier and see what you can catch.

Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach

For a little bit of everything Southern California’s beaches have to offer, visit Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach. The park has three “pocket beaches”: El Pescador is a secluded spot for the family that wants to body surf. La Piedra features sandstone cliffs, reefs, and choppy surf with kelp beds. El Matador is rocky with sea caves, and is a great spot for birdwatching.
